Spouse bought a car during a separation?

My friends spouse bought a new car while they were separated, and now they are heading for a divorce. He told her not to buy it and that he wasn't going to help her pay for it. We live in Ohio and he's afraid that he will get stuck having to pay for half of the payment and half of the insurance. Or will it be seen as an asset and hurt her case in the divorce?Spouse bought a car during a separation?
If it was acquired during the marriage it will be split in half.Spouse bought a car during a separation?
A legal separation would have stopped this. I'm afraid he is still liable. However , he will not be responsible for any insurance. Keep in mind that he is also entitled to half of the value of the car. he can make it part of the divorce settlement. Tell her to keep the car and the payments or just sell the car. Yes it is an asset. A divorce is just a settlement so he has room to negotiate.
Why would he have to pay for it? Did he go to the dealership and sign papers? NO. Just because two people are married doesn't mean EVERYTHING they do is joint. His name isn't on the vehicle. It's not his problem. She has to pay for it. As far as the insurance, if they're separated, they should be getting their own separate policies anyways.
Depending who's name is on it. If it's in both of their names, then he can be held reliable. If not, then he shouldn't worry about anything. It would be her credit that would get screwed up, if it ends up repo.
i don't know about Ohio but In Michigan if I was getting a divorce I would tell my husband that the car was his as well as the payment. I think the judge would agree to.
